RustRomM

Open-source desktop client for RomM — browse, download and play your retro library.

RustRomM is a free, open-source desktop app for anyone self-hosting a RomM retro game library. It connects to your server, lets you browse thousands of games across every platform with cover art, search the whole collection, and download titles straight to your machine — then launches them in the emulator you already use. It is deliberately a launcher rather than an emulator. RomM's built-in browser player struggles with game controllers: input lag, dropped buttons, remapping that refuses to stick. RetroArch, PPSSPP and Dolphin have spent years getting that right, so RustRomM hands the file over to them and you get proper controller support for free. Written in Rust with a native interface, it runs on Linux, macOS and Windows, on both Intel and ARM machines, with every build compiled and tested on its own architecture. Downloads stream to disk with progress and can be cancelled cleanly, never leaving a half-written game behind. The whole thing is GPL-3.0 and developed in the open.

How people use RustRomM

Play with a controller that actually works

RomM's browser player fights your gamepad—lag, dropped inputs, remapping that won't stick. RustRomM hands the game to RetroArch or PPSSPP instead, so the controller support is the one those emulators already got right.

Find something in a library of thousands

Browse by console or search the whole collection, with cover art and file sizes, instead of scrolling a folder of cryptic filenames.

Take games with you

Download to your laptop and play on a train with no connection to the server at all.

Set up each console once

Point each platform at the emulator you prefer, and every game from that console opens in the right one from then on.

Power notes

Things to know before you dive in

  • Free and open source under the GPL-3.0—fork it, change it, ship it.
  • Native builds for Linux, macOS and Windows on both Intel and ARM, each compiled and tested on its own architecture.
  • Downloads stream to a temporary file and are renamed only when complete, so an interrupted transfer never leaves a broken game behind.
  • Backed by 48 automated tests, including a suite that runs against a real RomM server.
